In less than 20 days, Team Dayā will head to Guatemala to build its eighth school overall and its second school in Guatemala.  Please consider a donation to the group or to one of our team members headed to Guatemala. All funds go towards school construction.

The new Team Dayā school will be constructed in the community of Aldea Santo Tomas Xacalta. It is about five hours to the north / northeast of Guatemala City and an hour east of Coban in the municipality of San Pedro Carcha, in the department of Alta Verapaz (see the location here).

Founded in 1899, this Mayan community of 795 people speaks the Qʼeqchiʼ language and produces corn as its main crop. From its name, Santo Tomas means “Saint Thomas” and Xacalta is the name of a hill nearby.

“[The new school] will improve the education of the community a lot,” said Manuel, who has been teaching in the school for 12 years.

Hear from Manuel:

The existing school uses two temporary, rustic classrooms to accommodate 161 preschool and primary school students (87 boys and 74 girls). The current facilities have dirt floors that are often muddy, and walls made from boards that allow the elements inside. Four teachers work in the school. Our project will deliver a school with two classrooms as well as girls and boys latrines.

Team Dayā’s Guatemala ‘24 Team

Our Guatemala ‘24 team is composed of five individuals whose work will make a difference to girls and boys, their families and the community of Aldea Santo Tomas Xacalta. This will be Team Dayā’s second project in Guatemala. The group funded its first school in the country in 2023 in the community of Caserío Sector Los Castro.

In 2023, it was estimated that 55% of the population in Guatemala lived in poverty, according the the World Bank. Approximately 17% of the population is illiterate, according to the World Factbook published by the CIA. Rates of poverty and illiteracy are substantially higher in rural areas and among indigenous people.
