Melodey Sepsey – Los Angeles

Bio: Melodey is the director of enterprise partnerships at Nexxen. She has also worked at Amobee, Turn and Starcom Mediavest Group.
Why: I’ve known about [Team Dayā’s partner] buildOn charity since I was in college. Having an adopted brother from Guatemala and understanding what the daily living conditions there are, I really was drawn to the mission of providing support through education to low-income countries. Majority of the people in these countries are illiterate, living below the poverty line, and education is non-existent or non-attainable. By building schools, providing supplies, and being a reliable resource to countries around the world, and in the US, you are giving people an opportunity for a more equitable life, and a better future.
How can you not love that? While I cannot join the actual school build (but if you want to, let me know) that is happening this year, I will be racing to help drive donations to support the team. And you can bet that I will be thinking about this for all 13 miles of my run and throughout training.
Now.. why am I running a half Marathon?
About two years ago I tore my ACL – what a journey that was. As it goes, I had just decided I would train for a half marathon before it happened, so that dream got put on hold as I dove into surgery/PT and all the fun that comes with injury.
After about 8 months post op I was cleared to run again – hoorah! You’d think it’d be easy getting right back out there – it was not. My first track run was a physical and mental battle as I limped my way around trying to remind my legs how to run and my mind that I wasn’t broken anymore. I looked like a newly born animal trying to use their legs again. So yea, if you saw me, no you didn’t.
Anyways, try as I might, after I’d run for more than a week it led to more pain than it was worth. So I stopped. I took a big step back last summer and decided to focus on healing and not push my body more than it wanted.
And wouldn’t yah know, that worked! So, all that to say, I’m feeling very grateful for the recovery and being strong enough to finally conquer this goal.
So, don’t donate to support my half-marathon dreams (though I’ll take good vibes, and prayers). Donate to give someone the opportunity to have things that I’m sure many of us take for granted – accessible education, and ultimately be a part of changing someones life and driving towards a better future.
