The Community
We are headed to a community called Arenales #2 in the municipality of Murra in the Department of Nueva Segovia. The area is in the north about 90 minutes drive from the Honduran border (and over six hours from Managua, the nation’s capital city). Arenales #2 is a small agricultural community of 381 residents growing beans, coffee and corn.
The School
The new school will represent a significant improvement on the existing structure. The current school building, servicing all 45 kindergarten to 6th grade students with three teachers, is a temporary adobe structure. It lacks proper lighting and has a damaged floor.

The limited space has been further divided with plastic to create separate areas for teachers, often requiring outdoor teaching when all students are present. One teacher instructs 17 first and second graders, a second teacher instructs 18 third to sixth graders and the third teacher works with the ten preschoolers.
The latrine facilities also require repair and the “parental” annex – used by the preschoolers – is in poor condition, with deteriorating wood, a rusty roof, missing sheets, and a dirt-covered floor.
The new school building will have two functioning classrooms as well as boys and girls latrines. Typically, the community will also build a rustic classroom using leftover construction materials, serving as both a storage area and a preschool classroom. An additional 10 students are expected to enroll once the new school is completed.
